Reviews: Morning Glory (2010) and Salt (2010)

Morning Glory (2010)

Starring: Rachel McAdams, Harrison Ford, and Diane Keaton

Directed By: Roger Michell

Written By: Aline Brosh McKenna

Very typical” girl works hard for her dream, don’t quite come true, but everything turns out well in the end” movie. No, I didn’t give anything away as you should know how this movie would go prior to seeing it. That said, is it terrible? No, not particularly, but it’s not memorable, either. Not at all inspiring, though does provide a few decent chuckles along the road to oblivion.

McAdams is fine in the lead role: cute in ways only she can be. It’s Ford who carries the movie as his grouchy old news anchor forced to do morning TV is pretty damn funny. Everyone else is sadly just there and rather under-utilized.

It’s fine for it is and you’ll probably like it if this sort of movie is up your alley.

Salt (2010)

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Liev Schreiber, and Chiwetel Ejiofor

Directed By: Phillip Noyce

Written By: Kurt Wimmer

Much like Morning Glory, Salt  is a “what you see is what you get” movie. Do you ever really get to know the character? No, not really, there isn’t much time to do so. As the movie starts, we’re basically off on our chase immediately. So, is it a great movie? No, but it’s fairly enjoyable. Very good action sequences (and there’s PLENTY of them). However, the twists and turns are plain as day and one could pretty easily tell what was going to happen upon meeting each character.

Jolie excels in various types of films, the action thriller is one of them. She’s very believable as an ass kicking spy and her fight scenes are all very well choreographed. They’re quick and hard hitting. Schreiber and Ejiofor are two of my favorites and I believe they should be getting better/more work than they currently do. Both are good here, even if they aren’t given all that much to work with.

So, good for a summer action blockbuster type…especially one that came out during the summer of 2010. What a brutal time that was.
